Delivering Our Hearts to Parkland

Efforts of hundreds bring 2000 Hearts of Hope to
support Stoneman Douglas High School community

On April 12, members of the Hearts of Hope Stratford and Newtown chapters along with our founder, Judy Pedersen, delivered more than 2000 hand painted clay hearts to the Parkland community where the tragedy at Stoneman Douglas High School took place on February 14, 2018.

For weeks leading up to the April 12th delivery, hundreds of volunteers all across the country were painting hearts while the Leadership Team prepared for the journey to Stoneman Douglas High School to deliver these individual messages of love, compassion, and  hope.

In Stratford, painting events were held at both high schools, the continuing education program, one middle school and elementary school, several civic organizations, and at the Hearts of Hope Stratford's monthly Paint With a Purpose event held at the Riverview Bistro.

The hearts were driven down to Parkland by Newtown's chapter president, Patti Ptak. Along the way, she posted photos of their progress.

Bunnell High School student government entrusted to our care a banner that they created and had the students sign to show their support to the Parkland community. Upon arrival, the banner was hung on the school's fence for the students and staff of MSD to see as they arrived to school.
Tremendous coordination and planning resulted in an emotionally charged special day.  Everyone experienced the full gamut of the emotions that Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School has experienced. People laughed, cried,  hugged and embraced throughout the delivery process. The Leadership team met with Ty Thompson, the principal of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, and presented him with the hearts and a photograph of the tiny treasure hearts made by the Stratford High School students and staff that can be hung in their school office as a continuous reminder that people in Connecticut care. Amazing  people stepped forward everywhere.
The Leadership Team made a brief visit to the Broward County Sheriff's Department and expressed their thoughts and appreciation to the First Responders. They were grateful that they were included in the visit and were so happy to receive the hearts.
